Our Commitment To Ethics:
The following text was agreed upon by the International Brotherhood of Magicians (IBM) and the
Society of American Magicians (SAM) as the Magician's Oath:
1) Oppose the willful exposure to the public of any principles of the Art of Magic, or the methods employed in any magic effect or illusion.
2) Display ethical behavior in the presentation of magic to the public and in our conduct as magicians, including not interfering with or jeopardizing the performance of another magician either through personal intervention or the unauthorized use of another's creation.
3) Recognize and respect for rights of the creators, inventors, authors, and owners of magic concepts, presentations, effects and literature, and their rights to have exclusive use of, or to grant permission for the use by others of such creations.
4) Discourage false or misleading statements in the advertising of effects, and literature, merchandise or actions pertaining to the magical arts.
5) Discourage advertisement in magic publications for any magical apparatus, effect, literature or other materials for which the advertiser does not have commercial rights.
6) Promote the humane treatment and care of livestock used in magical performances.
Hot Shot Magic is dedicated to these ideals. We promise to maintain
high ethical standards in our business to honor this code.
"...the unauthorized use of another's creation."
In the Magic community there is a growing and valid concern about products
offered to the public that are not from, nor authorized by, the original creator. They are commonly
referred to as "Knock-Offs".
Knock-offs harm everyone in the magic community. Consumers may receive
inferior goods; inventors do not receive compensation for their hard work; and
honest retailers lose revenue to those who choose to sell knock-offs.
I've seen some of my competitors come up with justifications why they sell
the knock-offs. Legally they are doing nothing wrong. Ethically, I
just can't agree with their actions.
When I started Hot Shot Magic I decided that customer service and ethics were
my top priority. After I became aware that some tricks in my inventory
were knock-offs, I replaced them with the original creations. If you find a
product in the inventory that you believe to be a knock-off please contact me so
that I can investigate and take corrective action.
"Discourage false or misleading statements in the advertising of
effects..." The majority of the product descriptions come directly
from the manufacturer or the wholesaler. With the tricks that I am familiar with
I add my personal enhancements to the descriptions.
Be very careful when reading the descriptions of magic tricks.
They are written from the perspective of what the spectator will see and not
what the magician is performing. Descriptions of tricks are not meant to
reveal the method and many times are worded to protect the secret.
If you find a product description on Hot Shot that you know to be false or
intentionally misleading, please contact us immediately so that it can be
corrected.
I believe that a strong code of ethics are the foundation of a successful
business.
I hope you share our ideals as well.
